To test the performance of the LaCie Porsche Design Mobile 2TB and 4TB ( both of which use SMR technology), we will cover two different areas of analysis: the BlackMagic disk speed test and 2MB sequential and random transfer speeds via IOMeter.

The bottom contains product information such as serial and model numbers. There is LaCie branding in one corner and one of the sides has the USB-C interface as well as a light indicating usage. The sides of the drives have rounded corners with high-polish beveled edges. The top of the device has the Porsche Design branding square in the middle. The finish does make it somewhat fingerprint resistant. They have an all aluminum enclosure with a sandblast finish.

Like most things Porsche and Porsche Design related, the device is beautifully crafted. In fact that company makes no performance claims other than stating its next-gen interface. While the device is powered by LaCie’s (Seagate) technology under its sandblast aluminum finish, it is as much as, if not more, about form than it is function. It also comes with an adaptor for older USB connections. The drives sport the new USB-C interface that the next generation of computers will also have making it future ready. The mobile drives come in a smaller size (only 10mm thick) for the 1TB or 2TB, with the 4TB coming in twice as thick, 21mm, but still fairly compact.

On an older PC the rates I see are 500 MB/S both read and write, as you would expect. I have tried this on my older mackbooks with SSD and they do scale down as the device is older. On my 2016 PC, I am seeing speeds like 1,000+ MB/s write, and 1100+ MB/S read. Since the “volume” is on your Startup Disk, you will see how fast it drive is. In Blackmagic select the disk image mounted. Mount the volume (if it is not already mounted). Make it big enough for Blackmagic to work with (7+ GB) and name it what you will. Create a disk image (.dmg) using the disk utility specifying file->new image->blank image. I found a workaround that will report the rates of the Startup Disk. When Blackmagic tries to read the Startup Disk, you get the message that the device is not writeable, hence you cannot rate the the transfer rates of the drive. Blackmagic has been updated to adequately report the speed of SSD devices.
